Chapter Ten

Adal followed Mango’s instructions on where to dock the cruiser in the tiny port next to the temple. He and Jastl had been on duty when they’d come within range of the small moon The Brethren had colonized. Mango and Galon had joined them when Jastl had notified them of their arrival and had taken over the navigation and engineering, leaving Adal to pilot and Jastl to maintain communications.

Adal had been down in a cargo bay working to separate the required supplies from those that would be delivered elsewhere the first time he’d come here, so this was actually his first time viewing the small moon which orbited a giant planet from the perspective of space. Jastl had explained the planet was uninhabitable by any known race; its atmosphere constantly generating violent storms that would have required total shielding around any communities just to survive. Apparently no race had thought it feasible to attempt taking possession of it.

The moon, however, was lush – almost tropical – and supported life quite easily, but The Brethren were the only inhabitants. Adal settled into one of two berths in the port and assisted putting everything but life-support on standby.

“I don’t know how long we’ll actually be here,” Galon said. “But I think it’s best if we just stay onboard other than meeting with your masters, huh Mango?”

“As you say,” Mango nodded. “There are no females here. Zyphra might find it uncomfortable within the temple.”

“You think we should leave her and Thurus here while we go talk to the masters?” Galon asked.

“I want Thurus, at least, with Adal,” Jastl said. “He’s going to have to recount what happened to the masters. A healer attending him while he did so would make me more comfortable.”

“Both healers will come,” Mango decided. “Bostel has told me Thurus and Zyphra cannot be separated for any distance or length of time. It is unhealthy for them.”

“So we’re all going?” Adal asked.

“I could stay on the cruiser,” Galon volunteered, looking at Mango.

“No, we will all attend the masters,” Mango said. “Everyone has taken oaths to our lord and we will stay together. The cruiser is docked. It can be locked to all except our crew and does not need supervision.”

“Okay,” Galon nodded. “Adal can you hand me those portable com units in that cabinet next to you? I need at least six of them to program with the codes for the cruiser.”

Adal nodded and opened the cabinet Galon indicated. He picked up two of the com units and handed them over and held two more in his hands while Galon quickly programmed the first two. He handed one to Mango and the other to Jastl. Adal handed over the next two units and picked up two more before closing the cabinet. Galon strapped one to his wrist, sat the other down and accepted the final two.

“Okay, I’m thinking Thurus needs one, but he and Zyphra can share since they won’t be apart; Bostel will need one in case he
